How can I find a proper pest control specialist?

Pest control is going to be a major threat for mankind in the coming future. Sooner or later we will all be affected by pests as it is omnisciently present everywhere. Whether it is ants or beetles in the kitchen or weeds in the vegetable garden, pests can be annoying. At the same time, many of us are not interested in pest control and the problems caused by pests as well as the pesticides we use to control pests.

Here are some questions most asked to Salt Lake City Pest Control:

How can pests be reduced and controlled safely?

Are the pesticides available, effective and safe?

How and when should pesticides be used?

Pests are beneficial as well as a curse to mankind. Animals, bacteria and some insects are beneficial to people in many ways, but the same time they can also be pests. Pests such as rats, ants, cockroaches, mice and flies are common in houses and apartments. There should be an effective pest control to prevent pests in multiplying themselves in houses, which include effective pest management, pest control and pest prevention.

Pest Management

The best and most effective way for controlling pests is pest management which includes many steps from Salt Lake City Pest Control. The first and most important step in Pest Control is to identify the pest problem. This includes finding out exactly what you are up against. Some pests (bacteria, animals) are really helpful to people, so it is very important to find out any harmful pests. The second thing is to decide how much pest control is necessary. Only the family who live in the affected area can judge how serious it is to take action. The third thing is to choose an available option for pest control such as chemical pest control or non-chemical pest control. You can control pests by many means; some of the options available are:

Non Chemical Pest Control

Exclusion: Any measure used to prevent entry of organisms indoors through openings in the building structure, doors, windows, or on infested plant or food materials.

Sanitation: Maintaining clean surroundings both outdoors and indoors removes potential areas where pests can feed, breed, and hide.

Habitat modification: Includes any method used to eliminate or disrupt areas where pests reside. For example, removing weeds and keeping well-mowed lawns reduces incidence of crickets and ticks.

Temperature control: Artificially manipulating the temperature of substrates infested by pests or areas where pests reside is an inexpensive nonchemical strategy. Bugs can be killed within minutes to hours when exposed to temperatures below 32° F and above 104° F.

Mechanical control: A rolled newspaper or magazine and fly swatters are some tools used for killing visible and less mobile or immobile pests.

Traps: Traps are escape-proof devices that capture highly mobile and active pests. Live traps can be used for rabbits, pocket gophers, and squirrels.

Chemical Pest Control

It is not advisable in and around the home and commercial premises, as it will affect people adversely. The major drawback of this method is the result of the chemical pesticides treatment which is generally temporary, which in turn need repeated treatments. If used incorrectly, home-use pesticides can be poisonous to humans. While you are using chemical pesticides for pest control, the most important thing to remember is to take care in choosing the right pesticide product.

Biological Methods

This is the method of using pest’s natural enemies to control them. Spiders, centipedes, ground beetles and ants are some of the beneficial bugs. This method is not harmful to people in any means and can be implemented effectively.

Most Common Pest Control Mistakes

Purchasing over the counter sprays & self- treating. Many grocery store products simply do not provide lasting benefits & ultimately cause more trouble than they are worth. If you currently have a pest control provider many times the spray you purchase is a contact repellant that kills the pests you see but has no lasting residual & actually contaminates the professional products in place. Using repellant sprays cause a phenomenon called “budding” with many species of ants. The workers are killed & do not return to the colony. The colony will then create more queens & they will “bud” creating more colonies! Roaches infestations may temporarily reduce but the larvae will soon hatch. Sprays for Bed Bug infestations end up spreading the infestation as they will avoid the sprayed areas for a short time. Our suggestion would be if you have an occasional invading pest spritz it with window cleaning spray-same result less expensive & definitely less toxic! On-going pest problems need professional treatment.

Starting a pest control service while you see pests & stopping when you don’t see pest. The pest you don’t see are not necessarily gone – they are under control. Pest will remain in the environment & will always be looking for food, water & harborage. The pest control provider’s goal is to control them in your environment. Stopping service because you don’t see pest will lead to pest populations getting out of control again. Consistent & regular pest control service will break that cycle.

Not knowing & understanding the Salt Lake City Pest Control provider’s treatment plan. Make sure you know & understand what your provider is doing for your service. Ask questions, check licenses, ask what they are treating your property with & why. Your Pest Control provider should be able to provide answers & suggestions for your pest control needs. “Green” products are regularly used in the industry today to reduce environmental impact. Find out what products will work for your home. If your Pest control provider seems to be just looking around your property find out why-better technicians will ALWAYS inspect before ever applying product. Learn more about IPM practices from your provider. If they don’t provide information & treatment plans incorporating IPM Practices & “Green” products call a company that can!

Pest Control Tips

Keep food put away in sealed packages or the refrigerator; remove debris, crumbs & grease especially from cracks & crevices. Don’t forget pet food left out or opened bags left in the laundry room or garage. For a persistent pet food infestation, place pet food bowl in a larger shallow pan fill with water to create a natural barrier. Eliminating as much as possible removes the pest’s food source.

Look for areas of excess moisture such as under sinks, shower/bath areas, hot water heaters, over-irrigating at exterior perimeter, & air-conditioning units re-direct or eliminate to remove pest’s water source. Gutters holding decomposing organic leaf matter should be cleaned regularly. Get rid of their homes-inspect storage areas at interior & exterior, and either place away from the structure such as firewood or place in plastic airtight bins to eliminate pest’s harborage areas. Remember this includes the garage & attic especially if cardboard storage boxes are being used. Plastic is recommended as cardboard is the perfect home since it can be a food source and a “nursery” for pests.

Get rid of branches and trim plants too close to structure. Keep trimmed about 2 feet away to remove easy traveling from plant/tree to structure entry points. Rid the entry points-inspect structure exterior and seal up obvious entry points around electrical conduits, pipes, windows & doors. Foam sealant in a can is a quick as well as inexpensive fix. Weather stripping at windows & doors will not only keep out pests but improve energy efficiency.

Over the counter pesticides must go if you are not seeing results. Use pesticides wisely – understand how they work and why. Know how to use them and what pests they affect. Ineffective use of pesticide is not just a waste of money but an environmental hazard for your family & pets. It is important to know how to use the pesticide, where it can be used, how much & how often to use it. Over application is as bad as under application. Applying the wrong products at the wrong areas will only cause the pests to scatter & multiply.

Beware of unlicensed applicator’s who are “doing it on the side” the liability is ultimately not worth the savings if any. The consumer has no recourse.

What if the applicator is injured on your property?

What if misapplication of pesticide causes injury/damage to you or your neighbors or pets?

Or worse yet is applying pesticide you cannot see incorrectly in your home?

A licensed, insured & bonded state regulated Pest Control provider must meet rigorous criteria to obtain & maintain their licenses. This is to protect the consumer like us at Salt Lake City Pest Control.

Know your pest control provider & make sure they are indeed state licensed & insured. See if they belong to industry related organizations & consumer protection organizations such as the Better Business Bureau.

Is Pest Control Important for Ecology and Health?

Even though insects are pretty small creatures; the damage they can cause in the house is huge and that is why they have to be controlled. Other than damaging expensive property around the home, then can be a cause of diseases, thus homeowners need to find ways of getting rid of them. There are two ways in which this can be done; either you can undertake the whole pest control process on your own or hire a professional company to do the work on your behalf. If you have done this before, then you are in a better position to handle the work. On the other hand, if dealing with unwanted pests is not your specialty, then employ a professional pest controller to help you get rid of all the household pests.

Common Pest

Every country worldwide has been fighting to control pests for ages. The term pest is usually referred to the harmful animals that are detrimental to human health or even the ecology. Pests can be even organisms, fungi, or weeds, etc. Before Salt Lake City Pest Control gives the various means to control the pests, here are a few of pests that we have to fight with most commonly.

Caterpillar is a pest that causes damage to the crops. Termites are known to damage furniture, and structures. Ants, cockroaches’ wasps and flies are also pests. Can we forget mosquitoes and bed bugs? Rats, rodents and other mammals not just cause infections but are also carriers of diseases. Birds like pigeon, seagulls, and crows are regarded as pest when their population turns a nuisance, as they cause more damage than good.

Controlling pests has always been a part of human evolution, since a balance has to be maintained. In order to improve the agricultural output, one has to keep away the pests from the fields and protect the crops. It is generally seen, where there is human activity, and food flies and other insects gather. Public places where people throw or dispose waste it a common breeding ground for the pests.

Not all Pest are Bad

There are some pests that help keep your home free from other dangerous pests. Therefore, before you use any pest control chemicals, first decide what types of pests you want to get rid of. Do this to prevent destroying beneficial pests. However, if you are not sure what types of pests to get rid of, then you need to use the help of a professional pest control companies. These companies have years of experience in dealing with pests and thus are knowledgeable on the various types of pests. Moreover, the company will get rid of the dangerous pests without destroying the beneficial ones.

Find the Source

To control pest from being a frequent visitor or an inmate of your home or business, it is best to keep their source of survival and attraction away expresses Salt Lake City Pest Control. Keep food closed, and close the trash. On a larger perspective, proper waste management and drainage system is important. The garbage is the breeding ground for mot of the pests. Rats, cockroaches, dogs, cats, mosquitoes are bound to be in your vicinity if the garbage is your neighborhood!

Importance of Pest Control

Controlling pests is very important. Some of the common diseases transmitted to humans due to pests are Rat fever, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Bird flu, Swine flue, Murine typhus, Leptospirosis and many more.

Various Types & Methods of Pest Controls Used:

Biological

Organic

Chemical

Sterilization

Repellents

Electronic and

Ultra sonic pest control devices

Electronic & Sound Devices

Today there are electronic and ultra sound devices that are used for home pest control. After using chemicals to control pest, today we have technology aided control methods. One has to understand, an electronic pest control system are not pest killers. These only drive away the pests and keep them away from your home. These devices use the ultrasonic sound waves, UV rays, electromagnetic waves etc to keep the pests and flies away. Very commonly used in commercial places like restaurants, hotels, and food stalls, where these pests are easily attracted to, the electronic pest controllers are effective. Even birds and spiders or bats can be scared away by the device. There are electronic rodent pest controllers available too, that trap these rats and rodents.

Warning that You’re in Over Your Head

There are many pest control jobs that you can handle yourself with home remedies or products you buy over-the-counter. However, there are some pests, such as bed bugs, wood-destroying pests, and disease-bearing insects, that you’re generally better off leaving to a pest control professional like Salt Lake City Pest Control. Additionally, it’s always a good idea to call in a professional for out-of-control infestations. It’s not always easy to know when the situation has gotten out of hand, though. Here are some warning signs that you need to call a professional pest control service.

You’re Overwhelmed by Their Numbers

While you may be able to handle pests in small numbers, it can be a different story when they number in the hundreds or more. If you find your basement or crawl space is teeming with creepy-crawlies, you probably have an extreme case that’s too big to handle on your own. Ants, termites, roaches, or other mass-reproducing insects can create a situation where you need to call a professional pest control expert. Besides the nasty experience of battling such a large pest population, here’s the best reason to call in a professional exterminator: Taking on a job that’s too big will end up costing you more in time, energy and money for chemicals and supplies than the cost of having a professional do it.

You Can’t get to the Nest

Some insects, such as termites, ants, and cockroaches, tend to form nests in hard-to-reach places. These nests can be in the foundation and sub-foundation, between walls, behind ceilings, under floors, inside stairs, and in other hidden areas of your home. Sudden weather changes, such as a shift from hot to cold, or dry to wet, will often drive insects from their original nesting spot into your home as they search for more favorable conditions. This is when not taking care of a subterranean infestation can really come back to bite you. You can avoid this scenario by calling a pest control professional who has the right tools to get to get to the source before it becomes a major problem.

The Pest Infestation Poses a Health Risk

Infestations can range from a nuisance to a health hazard, depending on the pest in question. Rats, mice, and fleas can carry diseases. These pests can not only contaminate your food, but also threaten the health of you, your pet, or your child. Sometimes you may face a more immediate threat, such as poisonous spiders, bees, wasps, or aggressive ants. Infestations of poisonous spiders, such as the black widow or hobo spider, should be dealt with by a pest control service. If you deal with these hazards yourself, you run the risk of serious injury if you’re bitten. Having such dangerous pests around poses a risk to loved ones, especially to those with allergies to bee stings and spider bites. Call in a professional pest control service whenever a pest could threaten your health.

You’re Not Sure What Pest You’re Dealing with

A key part of pest control is knowing exactly which insect is the culprit. Feeding and nesting behaviors can vary among species. Even different subspecies can require different strategies. Ants are one example of this; although the different types can be hard for the homeowner to distinguish, different types of ants often require different treatment plans.Sometimes, you may not even see the pest. If you find damage but aren’t sure what kind of pest has caused it, a professional should be able to figure it out and take care of the problem.

You’re Losing the Fight

If you’ve already attempted some do-it-yourself pest control and haven’t cured the problem, it’s probably time to get some help. Most of us don’t have the kind of time required to fully commit to pest control; we have other obligations like a full-time job and care of the family to keep us busy. If you end up spending more than half your day or weekend dealing with a pest problem, it’s probably time to let a professional deal with it.

Professional Help

Extermination service professionals usually offer weekly or bi-weekly checkups. This way, rather than trying to quickly fix it in one go and hope for the best, you can prevent future pest infestations from happening altogether. A good pest control provider will not only fix a current pest problem, but will take steps to prevent future pest infestations such as Salt Lake City Pest Control.

How do I keep Rodents out of my house?

You want to keep rodents out of your home, the best thing is preventative maintenance. Anywhere where there’s any openings large and you want to close those up. The best products to use for that, that you can get at any of your local hardware stores is grow foam, steel wool, and hardware cloth. Anywhere where these openings are just go ahead and close them up. Steel wool, shove it inside, around your pipes, especially outside where you got your plumbing sketches coming in from your faucets, underneath your doorways you want to close those off, anywhere in your attic area, on the side of your house, just go ahead and close up those screens with some hardware cloth. These are easy simple techniques that are cheap that you can use to keep those rodents out of your home.

If the problems still continue to persist or you just don’t know where to turn, give us a call, we’ll come out, give you a free inspection and we’ll see if we can’t proof your home for rodents, or if we can’t just crawl around, put out some anti coagulate bait, take care of those problems you have so you don’t have to worry about it.

What do I do if my pet has fleas?

If you think your pet has fleas, first of all, I’m not a veterinarian but I can say this, you want to find out if you have fleas first.

I’ll tell you a pest control trick that you can use in your home or even use it as a party trick. All you’ve got to do if you think there’s fleas, go ahead and put down a white piece of paper. It doesn’t have to be a large piece of paper. Place it near the dog or the animal that you think might possibly have fleas, and just wait and watch.

You’ll start to see those fleas actually jump and land on that piece of paper, which, you know that’s a problem. Then, you go take your dog, get the dog dipped, before you get the dog dipped, or the same time that you’re dipping the dog, give a pest control company a call, let them know what your problem is. They’ll come in and do a treatment in the dog area, where the dogs laying at, the dog room where the dog’s staying at, and the dog yard where the dog’s living at, or animal. After that, your problem should be gone. Just make sure that you get your dog dipped or you use any flea remedy that you may know of for animals, again I’m not a veterinarian, but I can get rid of your fleas after you get your dog dipped.

Do I need to worry if a rodent died in my wall?

If a rodent dies between your walls, should you be concerned? I guess that really depends.

Was an anti-coagulate bait used?

Was another bait used?

Did it crawl into that space and die?

How can you find out? Really, you’ve got to go by smell.

If you smell the problem then we can cut a hole, and remove that rodent from your wall void and patch up your dry wall to take care of that problem. Hopefully, you used us. We use an anti-coagulate bait that way it didn’t smell, it wasn’t a problem, and whatever wall that it went into it can be there for 100 years and it will never ever have any kind of a smell at all.

Do I need to leave my home during pest control?

If we come to your home for a basic spray (a quarterly service), NO, you don’t have to leave your home.

It’s best that you wear socks and shoes while we’re treating the inside of the home. It’s best that you wait fifteen minutes before you go out there and start throwing the ball around with your son. You always want to put your dogs away, not only for the dogs safety but our safety. Just because our products are bio pesticides, USDA approved that doesn’t mean that your dog will have allergic reaction, or your child might possibly have an allergic reaction to the diatomaceous earth, to the Nyban to the mother earth Chrysanthemum plant.

Those are things that, as a pest professional, we want to make sure it don’t happen. In order to do that, we make sure the areas we are treating are secure and also almost every product on the market, including Windex, can harm a fish, so if there are fish we try not to spray around those areas as well so you know, vertebrates don’t end up getting hurt in the process. Consider It Done Pest Control doesn’t want to harm or kill or hurt anything that’s not necessary. We truly believe that the bio way is the real way to get it done.
